Outline for Development

Please note that this is a work in progress. So, anyone who would like to contribute, please jump in!! If you do add information, please feel free to add your update info in the footnote area when editing (this isn't visible when just viewing the page). For those of you with friends who spend all of their time on the ASC listserver (giggle), try to encourage them to step out a little and join in on this process.

I also encourage our friends overseas to drop in their ideas as well.

TIMELINE AND OBJECTIVES

2005: Objectives for 2005 were to initiate a process for online development of an Online Cytology QA Compendium (050507). This prompted the creation of a CommunityChallenge project (050510) to stimulate online participation by our users. Summary: The Concept is Born mrgreen

2006: Objectives for 2006 center on increasing awareness globally to this project, invite and assist interested participants for online collaboration, create formal CYTOPATHNET statement on quality (complete-060109, CommitmentToQuality), initial focus on US related quality systems issues, document process, evaluate for improvements.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this Online Cytology Quality Assurance (QA) Compendium is to provide for cytopathology practioners worldwide a convenient online tool for quick access to information regarding Cytopathology Quality Assurance.

INTENDED AUDIENCE AND LIMITATIONS

The CYTOPATHNET Online Compendium on Cytopathology Quality Assurance is a document for laboratories and cytopathology practitioners (pathologists and cytotechnologists) who perform gynecologic cytology screening. It is not intended to represent the standard of care for use in medicolegal proceedings. Thus, this document focuses on laboratory processes and related topics and current topics in Six Sigma, Toyota Production Systems (TPS) and Quality Process management as it may relate to the practice of cytopathology.

The CYTOPATHNET Online Compendium on Cytopathology Quality Assurance is not intended for use as or a substitute for a procedure manual for cytology technical procedures. Readers may use references cited at the end of this Compendium, or other sources, for other information regarding the technical aspects of the cytopathology laboratory.

The process of creating an Online Compendium represents the truest form of consensus building and online collaboration by a group of professional peers within this specialty using the internet as the communication medium. Ideally, participation and/or review by national (as well as international) professional organizations would be desirable in an effort to creat an Open Source document available to all. By having an Online Compendium, the document can always be easily edited and contributed to by the worldwide community, and therefore represent the most up to date informational tool available. Hopefully, this Compendium will be able to adequately address both US as well as Foreign practitioners alike.

SCOPE

Provide an online compendium on cytopathology Quality Assurance that applies to the United States as well as our colleagues worldwide.
