open As I sit here manually counting and sorting the non-gyn cytology cases into site and diagnosis categories, I am wondering if we still have to do this. The data is completely subjective in categorization and interpretation so of little value in the big picture and completely unable to be validated or even replicated. 102899 pam.jonas@viachristi.org Thu 16 of Feb., 2012 14:54 MST Thu 16 of Feb., 2012 14:54 MST List Attachments 0

Cytology
How many Cytology labs “seed” known cases into the daily workload? This is done, supposedly, for QA/QC. Do labs need to document this practice, do they need a written procedure/protocol in their labs manuals? Such “cases” are taken out of sequence and stickers replaced, etc. Do you think this practice is used to “plant” mistakes (misses) into the workload to fire techs? Does CLIA address this practice.

open By now most of us know the slide limits/8hr day/24hrs. It makes CAP October, 2010 magazine a must read. It's nice to see these limits (finally) in print for all Cytotechnologists !! normalcells normalcells@yahoo.com Sun 24 of Oct., 2010 06:22 MDT Sun 24 of Oct., 2010 18:07 MDT List Attachments 0

Actually, upon further research, searches such as "Regulations for Implementing the ClIA '88: A Summary" on the www.cdc.gov/mmwr(external link) site (Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report) brings up similar results of Gyn Cytology screening numbers/8hr/24hrs day.
Another search "Regulatory Closure of Cervical Cytology Laboratories: Recommendations" shows the formula for determining per cent errors of Gyn Cytology Pap Smears. 5% being the minimal standard.

It is interesting how difficult it is to find documented evidence of CLIA's Cytology Quality Controls of "screening" more than 100 slides/8hrs/day and counting liquid-base sides as 1/2 a slide.
I found this recently: goto
www.cdc.gov/mmwr(external link)
On the top/right of screen find SEARCH box and enter 00016177 then find "Regs for Implementing the Clinical Laboratory..." scroll down to "Cytology Quality Control"
This is the first time I've seen reference to 1/2 slides for liquid-base gyn cytology and making up to 200slides/8hr/day.
The date of this document is ambiguous (to me) and seems to be 8/5/98.
I do not agree with this assessment of 200slides/8hr/day but there it is ...

open i HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THE 12.5 RULE. HAVE YOU EVER KNOWN FOR LABORATORIES TO MONITOR THEIR TECHS HOUR BY HOUR? CAN THE LAW BE INTERPRETED TO MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD SPEND 5 MIN ON EACH SLIDE? pinkbeats DIAMONDLPJONES@YAHOO.COM Wed 04 of June, 2008 21:28 MDT Wed 04 of June, 2008 21:28 MDT List Attachments 0
open Our lab currently conducts 5-year retrospective reviews not only on SILH+ paps, but also on any tissue with a diagnosis of SILH+. open Can you respond to the updated CLIA regs regarding cytotech workloads, and how liguid based vs. imaged paps are counted and what the maximum slides/day are? admin jana.sullinger@gmail.com Mon 08 of Oct., 2007 07:57 MDT Mon 08 of Oct., 2007 07:57 MDT List Attachments 0
